The party gets back in swing, and Marinette gets a present from Adrien-a handmade lucky charm, mirroring the one Marinette gave him in "The Gamer". Once Befana is defeated, Marinette has a heart-to-heart with Gina, who understands that Marinette has grown up, and she's just going to have to get to know Marinette as she is now-and maybe for her next birthday, take her on one of her trips. Chat Noir rescues Marinette from Befana with the help of her friends, and as soon as Marinette is deposited somewhere safe, she transforms and follows Chat Noir back to the fight. Befana's gun can either turn "good children" into flying mind-controlled angels or "bad children" into coal. The party is in full swing, but it's quickly disrupted by the appearance of Befana and her "angels", mind-controlled "good children" Befana shot with special candies from her candy gun. Her pain over losing touch with Marinette leaves her open to Akumatization, and Hawk Moth twists the situation, creating "Befana", who decides Marinette is a bad girl for lying to her grandma and deserves to be turned into coal. Once there, she laments that Marinette just doesn't have time for her old grandma anymore.then she finds the uneaten candies. Gina is gracious about it and tells Marinette to go have fun with her friends, then goes back to the bakery to rest up. Finally, Marinette gets the call from Alya, and comes clean with Gina that there's this big party her friends are planning. Marinette humors her, and pretends to like the (apparently not very good) candies Gina brought for her as a present since for whatever reason Gina thinks they're her favorite. Unfortunately, Gina seems to be of the impression that Marinette is still a little girl and likes to do things she really just doesn't like anymore. Marinette's caught off guard by this, especially since she already has birthday plans, but she decides to spend the day with her grandma until time for the party since she doesn't see her that often. Tom is acting super shifty, which confirms Marinette's surprise-party theory, but before she can get too excited, an unexpected visitor arrives: Marinette's grandma Gina! Gina, who lives in Italy and travels a lot, has come to spend the day with her granddaughter. Naturally, Marinette is a bit put out by this, but she thanks Tikki anyway, then goes downstairs to catch her parents in the act of baking a birthday cake. Tikki has a present for Marinette: a "Kwagatama", a magic bead made, apparently, from the hair of past Miraculous holders (eww) and Kwami snot (blllrgh) and delivered by way of a gross glowing loogie hocked right into the recipient's open hands (GYAAAAAAAGH). Tikki wonders how Marinette could possibly know this, but Marinette simply says she's wise to the whole surprise party gig, and there are ways she can tell. Tikki thinks this is a weird thing to do on her birthday, but Marinette explains that she's wise to what her friends are planning-the dentist thing is just a ruse, and Alya is throwing Marinette a surprise party. Marinette is anxiously waiting for a call from Alya, who wants her to go with her to take her sisters to the dentist. It's Marinette's birthday and she's looking forward to the (not-so) surprise party everyone's throwing for her, but her grandmother Gina showing up out of nowhere throws a spanner in the works-and gives Hawk Moth an opportunity to attack.
